Yahoo’s board has hired three investment
banking firms to evaluate potential bids for its
Internet operations in the clearest sign yet that
CEO Marissa Mayer may not have much more
time to turn around the struggling company.
The move announced Friday comes 2 1/2 weeks
after Yahoo disclosed it would consider “strategic
alternatives” while Mayer cuts costs through
mass layoffs, office closures and a purge of
unprofitable products.
Mayer believes the overhaul will boost profits
and sharpen Yahoo’s focus on mobile apps and
other services most likely to revive the company’s
revenue growth after years of decline.
Some Yahoo shareholders frustrated with
a steep drop in the company’s stock price
have been pushing for a sale of the Internet
operations instead.
The board has now responded to that pressure
by hiring investment bankers Goldman Sachs,
J.P. Morgan and PJT Partners to set up a process
for meeting with companies interested in
buying all or parts of Yahoo’s business. A special
committee of Yahoo’s directors will discuss the
options with the bankers and the company’s
legal advisers, Cravath, Swaine & Moore.
While the board mulls those alternatives,
Mayer will continue to pursue a turnaround
plan that includes jettisoning 15 percent of
Yahoo’s workforce.
“We believe that pursuing these complementary
paths is in the best interests of our shareholders
and will maximize value,” Yahoo Chairman
Maynard Webb said in a statement.
Mayer also is trying to spin off Yahoo’s Internet
operations into a newly created company while
leaving behind prized stakes in Alibaba Group, a
rapidly growing Internet company in China, and
Yahoo Japan. The proposed spinoff might not
be completed until next year, if Yahoo’s Internet
business isn’t sold before then.
Yahoo Inc. didn’t identify any of the
potential bidders that it might meet. Verizon
Communications has publicly said it might be
interested in buying parts of the company after
paying $4.4 billion last year to snap up another
fading Internet company, AOL Inc.
Analysts believe Yahoo’s other likely suitors
may include AT&T, Comcast and various private
equity firms that specialize in snapping up
troubled companies with well-known brands
such as Yahoo.
Virtually all of Yahoo’s current market value of
$28 billion is tied to its stakes in Alibaba and
Yahoo Japan. The holdings in Alibaba alone are
valued at $26 billion.
Analysts still believe Yahoo’s line-up of
still-popular services such as email, sports
and finance could fetch several billion dollars
in a sale.
Yahoo’s stock gained 62 cents, or 2 percent,
to close last Friday at $30.04. The shares have
plunged by 40 percent since the end of 2014.

Travel in style th is summer with th ese natural remedies
Going on vacation is something we usually look forward to, but travel can present its own challenges, and unfamiliar
activities can leave you sore, achy, tired, or even sick. Luckily, there are some simple ways to treat most common travelrelated
complaints. A natural medicine chest filled with just a few herbs can help you enjoy the trip. —Vera Tweed
motion sickness
GINGER has been
used for centuries
to treat stomach
problems in general,
and in the past 25
years, science has
documented its
benefits for motion
sickness specifically.
One study tested
the herb on 80 naval
cadets who were
unaccustomed
to sailing the high
seas. Compared
to a dummy pill,
1 gram of ginger was
effective in reducing
nausea, cold sweats,
vomiting, and dizziness.
Ginger is
available in pills,
tinctures, teas, and
chewable forms.
Peppermint extract
or tea is another
traditional motionsickness
remedy.
jet lag
Jet lag can be
mitigated with
energizing herbs
if you need a little
boost to stay awake,
or calming herbs if
you need to relax
and get some sleep.
FEVERFEW, commonly
used for
migraines, contains
the sleep-regulating
hormone melatonin—
in smaller
quantities than those
found in melatonin
supplements—
and is included in
some herbal jet-lag
formulas. GINSENG
supports the adrenal
glands, which in turn
help to stimulate the
natural production
of melatonin at night
and restore sleep
patterns. CHAMOMILE
is a gentle, relaxing
sedative that’s safe
even for children.
It enhances restful
sleep and helps with
digestion, which is
often disrupted by
odd schedules and
strange foods when
traveling.
aches and pains
Hiking, biking,
climbing, or even
long rides in the car
can leave you sore.
For joints, CURCUMIN
is a strong antiinflammatory
herb
that works quickly
to reduce pain,
especially in a form
that is designed to
be quickly absorbed,
such as Theracurmin,
available in a
variety of brands.
For sore muscles,
ARNICA GEL, rubbed
on before intense
activity such as a
long bike ride, can
prevent soreness.
Afterward, arnica gel
can relieve soreness
and help muscles
heal. Arnica gel is
not designed to be
used on broken skin.
injuries
Mishaps can occur
during vacation
activities—falling
off a bike, tripping
on a trail, or losing
control of unfamiliar
equipment such
as a jet ski or dune
buggy. If in doubt as
to the severity of the
injury, always get
medical attention.
To treat minor
injuries yourself,
ARNICA can be taken
internally as a
homeopathic
remedy. It reduces
swelling and bruising
and decreases the
effects of trauma,
which helps the
body heal. To speed
recovery further,
apply arnica gel on
sore or bruised areas
(but not on open
wounds). To heal
skin abrasions, use
a CALENDULA CREAM
or ointment on the
injured area.
sunburn and other
skin irritation
ALOE VERA GEL is
a tried and tested
remedy for sunburn
and other types
of skin irritation,
including itching
from insect bites and
rashes from poison
ivy. Gently washing
irritated skin with
CHAMOMILE TEA,
brewed and then
cooled, is another
soothing treatment.

The dislike that dare not speak its name
The Guardian
I care about animals, says Laura Marcus. I hate zoos, I won’t eat veal and I’m against the badger
cull. I love creatures great and small. But what I find very hard to explain to people, harder than not
wanting to have children, is that I don’t like pets. In fact, I just can’t understand why anyone would
want to “own” one. Every time I read about the Queen’s love of her corgis, for example, I feel a
“vague sense of confusion”. What’s it all about? Pet lovers say their pets are part of the family,
but they aren’t, you know. You didn’t give birth to them, they can’t talk back, they can’t feel for
you. Sure, your dog gives you a slobbery greeting when you get back from work but that’s
because he’s been starved of any company and he’s hungry. “If you imagine for one second that
your cat really gives a damn about your feeling then you’re sorely misguided.” She doesn’t love
you; she’s trapped by you. “Owning” a pet is about control: you could control a human in the
same way (Sit!). As I say, I love animals, but a real animal lover surely wouldn’t treat an animal
as a personal possession.
